LIBERIA: A DREAM CALLED HARPER { 26 images } Created 14 May 2013

Harper, Liberia. This is a collection of photos you won't see in the book.
This small town at West Africa's most southern location, Cape Palmas, was destined to become the capital of a new country, Maryland. Founded by freed slaves from the USA, of the American Colonization Society, Maryland later became part of Liberia, also founded by freed slaves by the Society (but from a different state in the US), with Monrovia as its capital.
Liberia's most important president ever, "President for life" W.V.S Tubman was born in Harper and it was under his 26 year rule that Harper became the dream town, the example of Liberian prosperity and progress, as a statement to the African nations that were colonized by white men.

  • Harper was going to be the capital city of the country of Maryland. Wealthy and influential families like the Tubmans and Andersons tried to make the small and sleepy town Harper a showcase. They succeeded. The Liberian wars practically destroyed the town: built by Liberians, destroyed by Liberians and maybe fixed up by Liberians. Harper is a metaphor for the Liberian experiment.
